The Duality of Material

This semester we were assigned the task of analyzing a threshold condition we were interested in. We focused on in between and transition spaces as a design technique rather than have the usual programs and housing create a resultant threshold(s) between spaces.

I studied the use of material, specifically wood and its physical and visual characteristics in regards to density and porosity. I was interested in how a material can be rendered its usual form or its opposite. This led me to think about the material as a way to create a multitude of conditions, because it can be rendered differently, to create a continuous threshold with different yet similar conditions. The idea of movement and static conditions or interaction led to the design of my gateway.
