Suburbanized Urbanism

This project sought to meet the expectation of high density, affordable housing in the urban setting of Leimert Park while incorporating suburban qualities. 1, 2 and 4 person unit variations make up the residential programming while a day care on the ground floor adds a much needed commercial programming for the community’s families. The overall grid layout of this building is set up like a checkerboard, with alternating positive/negative space that dictate interior and exterior spaces as well as their visibility on the façade. The addition of outdoor terrace spaces and primarily outdoor circulation helps provide the suburban aspect while also filtering in light from all directions.
