Mega Medieval is an exploration of the medieval city plan at a modern scale. Inspired by the walkable, close-quartered streets of Rome, our plan for Xiong’An utilizes an organic grid to blend the borders between zoning districts. Mega Medieval features two voronoi grids – one responsible for natural features, one responsible for roads and building plots – overlaid atop one another to capture that feeling of urban chaos without sacrificing meticulous control. The University in the south is adjacent to several institutes, including biofuel research and engineered crops. Several waterways span the length of the site, with small islands peppered throughout as a natural form of flood control.
