ARCH 302B: Architectural Design III Gallery: Re-thinking the LA industrial vernacular and the long span tradition

Leimert Park Community Center

This Community Center works as an avenue between the N-NE side of Leimert and S-SW Leimert park. The avenue connects newcomers coming from the newly developed metro station adjacent to the site. It provides a new home for new local businesses, children’s daycare, classes for both children and adults, 4 basketball courts which can be repurposed, and a large performance area embedded in the avenue to provide constant public circulation and activity that the new businesses will thrive from.

The design concept consists of creating a permeable and visually accessible facade and “objects” that collide with the regular form of the building to create a separation between recreation areas and circulation/ other programs. This is done through the collision of 2 structural grids, one rigid on grid, and the other rotated off grid that is housed by the 2 way long span truss.
