Leimert Park Community Center

In considering the residents of Leimert Park, this community center strives to produce a welcoming and unintimidating environment; one that can seamlessly transition to the streets and encourage communal activity. This inspired the function of the roof to take on that of a canopy. In its most primitive form, the canopy offers shelter, safety, and sense of comfort. It is able to naturally draw people in, allowing for the users to easily engage with the program below. Much of the program is physically disconnected but continues to strive for a sense of openness and transparency as it utilizes visual connections from program to program, primarily through the basketball courts, putting the center of activity constantly on view. Overall, the center aims to create a home in which communal engagement in Leimert Park can take place.
