ARCH 402A: Architectural Design IV Gallery: Thresholds of Segregation in Los Angeles

Inside/Out

This project focuses on the relationship between the users and the threshold, which creates the gateway condition for the various users at different scales. The project sees human perception as a tool to guild the directionality for the users, who are mainly the residents from the local community, the residents from affordable housing, and the visitor from the metro station. Throughout the threshold gateway, users are able to experience the change of the spatial quality, such as shifting in the horizon line, projecting different views, and changing in movement. Moreover, the threshold path is leading people to different cutout spaces with different activities to encourage intermingle life. In the end, this threshold gateway is not only space in-between but a place where people will stop, gather, and interact to promote the social lift in the neighborhood.
