ARCH 505B: Graduate Architecture Design I - Elements, Principles and Phenomena Gallery: The Inside and the Outside

Picture in Picture

This project is about the connection between inner space and environment outside. Focusing on episodic views that are experienced through movement within the space, each portal and frame to the exterior highlight particular moments within this internal journey. Internal visual connections between different levels and the relationship between inside and outside are emphasized in the internal spatial organization of the design. The surrounding landscape has been transformed into a micro-forest, which modulates views in and out of the project. The whole massing is lifted up by “V”-shape columns with a public garden beneath the dwelling. At the center of the dwelling, is a central light well where a tree is planted, open to both the garden below and sky above, inserting both nature and sun light into the project. A staircase winds up and around the light well, and framed openings are set in different directions in order to provide concise views to the exterior. A roof garden is open to the sky, with a terrace of planting, another moment of bringing natural elements within the territory of the project.
