CONTORTA

Contorta is a type IV construction co-working space, nestled between the Spring Street Bridge and the LA river. The LA river is an iconic public amenity whose communal value is directly impacted by the porosity of architectural conditions along its edge. As such, any new construction along the river’s edge must facilitate and enhance public access to the river. Contorta responds to these criteria by bending, breaking, and lifting a tube of office program to fit within the boundaries of its site, creating a public green space at the street level. The resulting plaza acts both as a node along pedestrian pathways through the site and as an ancillary gathering space to the LA river.
