ARCH 541A: Landscape Architecture Design

Translations & Dialectics

This studio teaches the basics of landscape architecture design, from blank page to finished design. It does this through an exploration of “translations” and “dialectics.” In terms of the former, students learn how this earnest and prosaic activity can structure an imaginary design practice. In terms of latter, the course introduces landscape architecture as a dialectic design practice; one that crafts on-going dialogues between logics, identities, and processes. Over the course of the semester, students applied this framework to create two designs; a socially distant platform in a natural park and a landscape-inspired space within the USC campus.
