Unholy Alliances, Alchemical Processes and Black Box Magic

ARCH 502: Architectural Design V

Instructor: Eric Haas

SP. 20

We mechanistically translate quality into quantity all the time, assessing value through observation and judgment and translating it through some kind of benchmarking protocol. That rubric itself is predicated on a system of metavalues which are baked into a usable measuring stick.

In an era discreetly immersed in the shared language of quantification, we less obviously can go the other way: creating quality and character from quantifiable matter by reverse engineering the contemporary trend toward digitalization.

This studio explored design’s necessary role in doing just that: taking base material and changing it to gold through enigmatic processes that translate facts into fictions, numbers into poetry, and sustenance into epiphanies.
